관사의 생략

1. 호격(Vocative) : 부르는 말
Doctor, I have a headeache
Waiter, bring me a cup of coffee

2. 자기 가족을 가리 킬 때

3. 관직, 직위를 나타내는 말이 보어로 쓰일 때
They elected him mayor of their city
He was appointed chairman

4. 식사, 운동경기, 학과목 이름 일 때
Let's play tennis
We had breakfast at seven
We have an examination in mathematics today

5. 건물이 본래의 목적으로 사용되는 경우
We go to church on Sundays
I go to school at eight
They were at table

6. by + 교통수단을 나타내는 명사 앞에
She goes to school by bus
They went there by plane

(주의 by가 아닌 다른 전치사일 경우에는 생략하지 않음)
I went to airport in a taxi

7. 2개의 명사가 대구(擡句)를 이루는 경우
They became man and wife
arm in arm
side by side
day and night
